Run for Gold: A 2,200km Journey of Love, Loss, and Hope
At 66 years old, Lim Shyang Guey, affectionately known as SG, is preparing to embark on the run of a lifetime. This extraordinary journey
is driven by love, loss, resilience, and a deep desire to make a difference for children with cancer.
SG and his wife of more than 37 years, Goh Joo Lee, once shared a simple but meaningful dream: to one day travel on foot around
Peninsular Malaysia together. That dream was never realised. In August 2024, Joo Lee passed away at the age of 63 after a battle with
gallbladder cancer.
Heartbroken but resolute, SG made a decision: he would complete their shared dream alone. This time, however, with renewed purpose: to
raise awareness and funds for children with cancer, in collaboration with the National Cancer Society Malaysia (NCSM).
The Mission: 2,200km for Children with Cancer
Under the campaign name “Run for Gold”, SG will run approximately 2,200 kilometres across Peninsular Malaysia, covering all 11 states and
federal territories over an estimated 90 days. He plans to run 25–35 kilometres daily, with scheduled rest days in between.
The journey will begin on 28 March 2026 at the NCSM Home of Hope in Penang, SG’s birthplace. From there, he will take a ferry to
Butterworth, head north to Perlis, traverse the East Coast, journey south to Johor Bahru, and then move up through Melaka, Kuala Lumpur, Ipoh,
before finally returning to Penang. He aims to complete the run before 22 June 2026, just ahead of his 67th birthday.
One particularly emotional milestone will be Melaka, where Joo Lee grew up, a place filled with memories of family, heritage, and shared
moments. As a grand finale, SG plans to run non-stop around Penang Island, a punishing 78km, to mark the completion of this remarkable
journey.
Why “Run for Gold”
The gold ribbon is the universal symbol of childhood cancer awareness, representing the preciousness of children and the courage,
strength, and resilience of young patients and their families. Through Run for Gold, every kilometre SG runs is dedicated to ensuring that no
child faces cancer alone.
Having walked the cancer journey closely as a caregiver, SG understands first-hand the emotional, physical, and financial toll cancer
places on families. This run is his way of honouring his late wife’s memory while extending hope and support to children currently fighting
cancer.
A Challenge Fueled by Experience and Heart
Though this is SG’s most ambitious challenge yet, he is no stranger to endurance. An experienced runner and adventurer, he has:
- Climbed Mount Kinabalu twice
- Completed over 15 half marathons across four continents
- Run on the Great Wall of China
- Completed the Sydney Marathon
Joo Lee was always his greatest supporter, cheering him on at races and even completing her own first half marathon in 2023. Her spirit
continues to accompany him on every step of this journey.
To ensure safety, SG will be supported by a two-person crew travelling by car, assisting with hydration, nutrition, and logistics. Due to
Malaysia’s heat, most runs will begin as early as 5.30am.
Join the Journey
While Run for Gold is a solo run, SG warmly invites the public to be part of it.
Anyone is welcome to walk or run alongside him for a short distance, at any point along the route. No registration is required, just a
shared belief in making a difference.
“This is my way of showing that even in our later years, we can still contribute meaningfully to society,” SG shares. “If this run can
help raise awareness and bring hope to children with cancer, then every step is worth it.”
How You Can Help
All funds raised through Run for Gold will support NCSM’s vital programmes, including:
- Children’s cancer care
- Patient and survivor support
- Caregiver assistance and resources
Every ringgit donated helps ease the burden faced by families and brings hope where it is needed most.
