THE RELAY TORCH

“Journey of Hope” Torch
The “Journey of Hope” Torch is an extraordinary fine art piece, meticulously crafted in 2023 by Mr Liu Cheng Hua, the esteemed Head of Fine Arts at the Malaysia Institute of Arts. This unique torch, the only one of its kind in Malaysia, stands as a powerful symbol in Relay for Life Malaysia, embodying the resilience of cancer survivors and the collective strength of the community in combating cancer.
Mr Liu Cheng Hua took on the challenge of creating this torch pro bono, driven by a deeply personal connection to the cause. His sister’s battle with cancer and the profound impact of the disease on her and those around her inspired him to contribute meaningfully to the fight against cancer. This personal resonance and his commitment to making a difference led to his enthusiastic collaboration with the National Cancer Society of Malaysia (NCSM).
Crafted from recycled aluminium sheets, the torch boasts a sophisticated and dynamic design that required months of meticulous work. The aluminium was hand gas welded with fire, showcasing exceptional craftsmanship and precision. Aluminium was chosen for its numerous advantageous properties, including corrosion resistance, lightweight nature, cost-effectiveness, recyclability, strength, durability, malleability, reflectivity, and formability.
The torch features a portable lamp with both white and red lights, replacing a real flame to ensure safe handling. Supported by four pillars, the lamp symbolises NCSM, cancer patients, cancer survivors, and the general public in Malaysia affected by this disease. The red light represents the enduring fire and spirit driving the fight against cancer, while the white light symbolises hope and the vision of “Living in a world without cancer,” as envisioned by NCSM.
The name “Journey of Hope” aligns seamlessly with NCSM’s motto, “Giving Hope. Celebrating Life.” This journey reflects the relentless fight against cancer, marked by innovative ideas and significant changes. NCSM strives to ensure that no Malaysian fears cancer by promoting an understanding of the disease that leads to prevention and early detection, and by providing the best possible care and support for those affected by cancer.
As a beacon of hope and unity, the torch illuminates the path for all participants and supporters, symbolising acceptance, hope, and positivity. It intertwines the narratives of life and loss associated with cancer, honouring those who have succumbed to the disease and reinforcing the significance of NCSM’s mission.
Carried over several weeks to host cities, primarily on foot by runners but also using other forms of transport, the torch symbolises the journey and unity of the community. In 2024, the torch relay will traverse from Kuala Lumpur to Melaka and Perak, and finally return to its home at the National Cancer Society Malaysia building in Kuala Lumpur, where its journey began.
